Tone and voice

Design guidelinesLast updated: Dec 22, 2022

This brief section focuses on recommendations for creating interface texts.

Tone

Make sure that your tone doesn’t mislead the user. For example, if you use an academic tone, the user may have the impression that they must have a higher level of education. Find a style that makes your app clear, direct, and respectful.

Technical terms

Avoid using special and technical terms without defining them because some people don’t know them. If you must use a term, make sure that you have it explained and clarified. To introduce terms to the user, show tips or a demo tour.

Set phrases

Avoid using idioms and slang because they may depend on culture and may be hard to interpret because of different meanings.

Humor

Use humor carefully. Sometimes, humor is hard to understand for people from different cultures because they may interpret it differently. Adding too much humor can also be annoying.
